If you want to take a break from surfing, fishing and sunbathing, we recommend the village of Southport, NC. http://www.cityofsouthport.com/ It is approximately a 20 minute drive north of  Ocean Isle Beach.  The town is not only steeped in history, but there are many places to have a meal, places to pick up that antique you've been searching for or take a ferry ride!  The ferries depart Southport for Oak Island, Bald Head Island and Fort Fisher.  The ride is as enjoyable as the destination!
