Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Planet Fun

This past Wednesday, November 16th 2011 the world famous Budweiser Clydesdale eight-horse hitch and the sample wagon made a special appearance at Planet Fun in the neighboring city of Shallotte, NC.

This equine event began at 4pm and lasted little over an hour. Shifting weather prompted an early end to the event. Santa and friends had a sing-along with holiday music in front of Planet Fun while the team of Clydesdales stood poised for pictures. Dedicated staff diligently tended to the goliath icons, keeping them comfortable in the presence of an elated crowd. Immaculately groomed from head to hoof, roses at the tips of their braided manes and adorned with ornate Budweiser tack, the gallant 8 were well mannered throughout the entire gathering. Their mascot Dalmatian, Brewer stood at his post atop the wagon proudly watching over the activities, while taking in the aromas from the KFC across the street.

While summer has passed and the crowds are gone, it’s still a great time to take the family to the beach. The days are still warm enough to enjoy looking for seashells or exploring the area. Even though things are a little slower this time of year, it also provides the perfect opportunity for the local businesses to make necessary repairs and upgrades. It’s also when businesses will start planning for the upcoming year.

The past several weeks we at the Ocean Isle Inn have been busy too! We’ve been focusing on our Social Media Program. If you’ve been anywhere near a computer the past year, no doubt you’ve heard of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The marketing and advertising trends are quickly transitioning from that of traditional print advertising to digital media. This past year the Ocean Isle Inn has played host to online Twitter Parties, Tweet-Ups and even our own Social Media Moms Conference and several bloggers have written about us. Now things are getting even better! We are pleased to be the first area hotel to start our own Featured Bloggers and Ambassadors Program.

Ocean Isle Inn helps Sea Turtles

Here in North Carolina the endangered Sea Turtles are being watched very carefully. Every year these Sea Turtle come up on the beach to lay their eggs. Sometimes their visit to the beach is uneventful. Other times they can arrive hurt or injured by nature or humans. Here in coastal NC, we have several groups and organizations that have a mission to help those Sea Turtles thrive in their natural habitat and bring awareness to their cause. Some of the businesses in the very popular nesting areas near the beach are also trying to help residents and vacationers aware of the efforts to keep our Sea Turtles safe!

One such business trying to help out the efforts is our company, the Ocean Isle Inn. Just a short distance from historic Wilmington, NC or Myrtle Beach, SC, the Ocean Isle Inn is in the heart of the Sea Turtle nesting and preservation areas. If you’ve never seen Sea Turtle, they are absolutely beautiful creatures and they need all the help we are able to give.

Just about every hotel you stay in has those little soaps, shampoos and other amenities for you to use during your stay. You see so many different brands and types and most of them are just random items. Well, the Ocean Isle Inn has chosen a specific brand for a very specific reason. An environmentally friendly selection of amenities from Brame Specialties called the Preservation Line and features a logo of the Sea Turtle. They chose the Sea Turtle as their logo because it is an indigenous animal to North Carolina and has been endangered for many years. The Sea Turtle logo isn’t all show, though. The company has partnered with the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Island, NC. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Preservation line of products is donated to help the Center save the Sea Turtles.

Ocean Isle Beach has its own dedicated team of Sea Turtle volunteers that comb the beach each morning during the nesting season looking for the tale-tell sign of a new Sea Turtle nest. The Ocean Isle Inn is pleased to be able to give back to our community through this program.

A Great Start to the Season

Spring has finally sprung at the coast of North Carolina! While many of our neighbors to the western part of the state are still battling snow and ice, we are opening up the windows to let the sunshine in. It has been a productive winter though. We’ve been busy with many projects over the past few months at the Ocean Isle Inn: enhancements to our property, upgrading guest amenities, etc. We even redesigned our entire website! Valentine?s weekend 2010 at the Ocean Isle Inn

Valentine’s 2010 was indeed unique for visitors at the Ocean Isle Inn here at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The guests who came to celebrate the special weekend with that really special significant other were greeted by over 4" of snow that covered Ocean Isle Beach on Saturday morning.

As with many other parts of the country, the coastal Carolinas did not escape Mother Nature’s wrath this past weekend. However, unlike a lot of other areas, we were fortunate that our special snowfall was gone by Sunday afternoon. The last major snow that hit Ocean Isle Beach was in 1989 that was over 12" and literally paralyzed this part of the state for several days.

A lot of our guests and locals were out early taking lots of photos of this memorable event. We had a college baseball team staying here that got into the act by making a snowman on the beach early Saturday morning. They were joined by others who chose to engage in snowball fights or take a walk in the snow on the beach-quite an experience.

1Children's Camp at Ocean Isle Beach

If you vacation with younger children who may not as yet have developed an appreciation for the beach, sun, and ocean water, we have a suggestion for their entertainment.

Again, for 2010, the town of Ocean Isle Beach will be sponsoring a Childrens’ Camp beginning on the first Monday of June and will run until the third Thursday in August.

Camp OIB is located at the Community Center at 44 East First Street-just a short walk from the Ocean Isle Inn. Sessions are held 4 days a week from Monday through Thursday from 10:00 until 12:00, weather permitting. Campers ages are from 3 to 10 years of age. Camp OIB can accommodate up to 35 campers per day. Camp registration begins each day at 9:30 and no reservations are required. An adult must stay with the child for the daily camp session. The camp is provided free of charge but donations are greatly appreciated.

The activities include games, arts and crafts, music, dancing, and stories representing various themes such as boating & water safety; turtles; mermaids and tropics; pirates; seashells, and beach games.

This is also provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to meet other children while they are away from their friends at home. The adults will also enjoy meeting other vacationers from around the world, and often they will arrange beach play dates for their children while at Ocean Isle Beach.

Kings Point Merchant Marines Reunion

Recently, the Ocean Isle Inn hosted the 12^th annual reunion for graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy located in King’s Point, New York. This year’s group consisted of some of the first to earn their degrees after the federal government assumed control of the Academy in 1943. Because of the need for these Merchant Marine officers, the training time was reduced from 48 to 24 months. The Merchant Marines have been an invaluable adjunct to the U.S. military through several world wars and other international conflicts providing materiel where needed, as needed.

One of this year’s attendees was a gentleman who was one of the original instructors at the Academy in the 1940’s. This year’s group included graduates from the mid 40’s through the 60’s. Most of the men who were in attendance were accompanied by their wives.

One of the activities that most of the group took part in was several rounds of golf at local courses in the area. As in years past, a good time was had by all.

It’s Fall again and that can only mean one thing - time for the annual North Carolina Oyster Festival. This year will mark the 29th anniversary of the festival celebrating the mighty mollusk. Each year over 45,000 people attend the Oyster Festival. Hosted by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event will be October 17-18. The Oyster Festival will take place on Ocean Isle Beach next to the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

The 29th Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival is a weekend of fun filled family activities. There’s live music, arts & crafts, a road race, surfing contest, kid’s area, food stands and of course, the Oyster Shucking competition and Oyster Stew Cook-off.

For the third year in a row, we here at the Ocean Isle Inn are working together with our parent company Sloane Realty to raise money for Habitat for Humanity here in Brunswick County.

Last year, a contribution of $20,000 was made to the local chapter of Habitat and we want to exceed that this year.

As you may know, the goal of Habitat for Humanity is to help provide families with a safe, decent place to live. Through contributions of money, materials and labor, homes that were once a dream are now a reality. The owners of the home participate in the construction of the home by providing their “sweat equity”.

Once the families become residents of their new home, payments are made based on their individual financial circumstances.

To help meet and exceed the donations we received in 2008, this year Sloane Realty is sponsoring a golf tournament on June 13. All participants will automatically be entered in a raffle with seven vacation prizes to be awarded. One of the prizes is a one week stay in an apartment in Athens, Greece! Kids Activities at the Ocean Isle Inn

Again this summer, the town of Ocean Isle Beach is sponsoring a day camp for children. The "camp" will be at the beautiful Ocean Isle Beach Community Center each weekday from 10 AM until 12PM. The Community Center is located wthin a short walking distance from the Ocean Isle Inn. Daily activities will vary. On Mondays, it is Sea Turtle Day; Tuesdays are Tropical Tuesdays; Wednesdays are Wacky Wednesday with beach games and activities; Thursday is Pirate Day and Friday is Boat & Water Safety Day. There is no charge and the maximun enrollment is 35 children per day. Children between the ages of 3 to 10 are welcome and parents are asked to accompany their children. It's a wonderful time for family togetherness and fun.

Activities officially begin on June 1 and run through August 21, 2009. Registration begins daily at 9:30 AM. Bring your children and join the fun!

A few years ago I came upon an article titled "Hotel Common Sense". It states 15 observations which makes you reflect on how well you are running your operation and leading people. I find myself going over these observations from time to time as a reminder to me that these observations should be practiced at all times. When I have consulted with other people in the hotel business these observations are the first thing I hand them. Then would ask "how many of these observations they feel they practice in their day to day operation?" It always seems to hit a nerve and get operators moving in the right direction.

Here are these 15 observations I hope you find them useful not only for the hotel business but for any buisness.

“Hotel Common Sense”

Always respect the three parts of every successful hotel operation. Make your decisions with the needs of the owner, associate and customer on mind.

Listen more, talk less. MANAGE BY WALKING AROUND is priority one.

Quality cannot be a sometime thing by some people. Create team spirit by involvement through Quality Assurance programs. Concentrate on quality and quantity will follow.

Introduce a highly visible and enforced service code. Lead by visible example.

Establish a mission statement that includes pride and credo on what your purpose is.

Define and deliver EXCELLANCE. Practice philosophies of fairness with everyone. Always.

The only thing constant in our business is change. If you do not improve on today’s service delivery, someone else will.

Delegate authority, responsibility and accountability.

If you expect your team to succeed, you must personally be involved in the selection, orientation and ongoing training process.

Continuing education is a must. WE all need to be replenished. Study other winners, but not just those in your profession.

Dare to fail!

Evaluate personal time management. Use the 80/20 rule (80% of your results will usually come from 20% of your focused efforts)

Manage systems. Lead people. Coach your team. Be a real mentor.

Keep the proper balance of high tech and high touch. Use technology to help guests first, the hotel second. People will always relate to “high touch” in our business.

In today's busy fast-paced world people often forget that exemplary customer service can begin with a friendly "Hello". Taking a genuine interest in your customers needs sometimes seems like a long lost practice. Time expressed with genuine concern and common courtesy is the best investment. Recently, a visiting guest remarked about how his arrival was a truly welcoming experience. He was taken aback by the warm reception that greeted him as soon as he walked through the lobby door. Not only from the associate behind the counter but also by the staff that were present nearby. As it turns out this gentleman was a business owner himself, a Dojo Instructor. He expressed his own ideals about exceptional customer service and how his own staff was encouraged to treat the business as if it were their own. Before heading to his room, this customer was certain he'd be returning to the Ocean Isle Inn because of our genuine hospitality.

OBX Cruz for the Cure

The Ocean Isle Inn is proud to be the host of the 2009 OBX Cruz for The Cure. This Is the North Carolina's 6th-Annual Obx Cruz for the Cure.The main focus will be the silent auction on Friday which anyone can attend. The Fundraiser will benefit The Parkinsons Disease Research Center at Duke University.

Saturday morning will bring a new adventure. For the first time, the “Ocean Isle Eagle Eye Rally and Poker Run” will be held with many turns, tricks and scavenger hunt. Prizes will be awarded for several different finishes. I mean good prizes too. At 2pm we will have the “Four Knights” band from Wilmington out by the pool. This group is fantastic, especially if you like beach music. Our afternoon will be dancing, and fun fellowship by the pool & beach with dinner catered on the beach.

Sand Castles in Ocean Isle

There is always fun to be found when building sandcastles on the shores of Ocean Isle Beach. Though the bucket shaped castle is a classic, why not get creative with your sand sculptures and create something that stand out to people enjoying a walk down the beach?

Here's an Ocean Isle Inn version of Sandcastle Building 101:

First of all you’ll need to do some planning and you’ll need a few things:

Lots of imagination
Sand Castle Carving Tools- putty knife, spoons, etc. - use your imagination (see above)
Shovels
Sunscreen
Paper And Pencils
String
Buckets

Step 1 - On paper draw a rough sketch of the castle you’d like to build.

Step 2 - Choose a square site near the water, but not so close that waves will destroy your castle as the tide comes up. Make sure the square is large enough for your castle plans.

Step 3 - Bring up large buckets of water from the ocean.

Step 4 - Scoop wet sand onto the center of the area in which you’ll be working.

Step 5 - Work fast so the sand stays wet.

Step 6 - Build towers by forming and stacking sand patties about the size and shape of thick pancakes. Place larger patties on the bottom, and gently shake the patties from side to side as you pile them so that the sand settles. Seal your towers by gently pouring water over them.

Step 7 - Build walls to connect the towers of your castle by jiggling - gently shaking from side to side - wet sand into brick shapes and laying them on top of each other.

Step 8 - Carve the towers and the walls into shapes using tools such as a small trowel, a putty knife or plastic utensils.

Step 9 - Dig a moat around the castle to protect it from invaders, such as breaking waves and dogs.

There you go. 9 simple steps to create a truely magnificent fortified sand castle during your next stay at our Ocean Isle Beach resort.

Only Minor Damage From Hanna

Damage in Brunswick County from Tropical Storm Hanna appeared minor at daybreak Saturday as area town and power officials began to assess the situation.

Town officals from Ocean Isle Beach have reported that there has been no sign of significant damage to structures along the beach other than some minor flooding. It was estimated that about 25,000 homes lost power in the middle of the night however the majority of households had their power restored before daybreak.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington reported that Hanna's eyewall made landfall in the Little River/Calabash area between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.. Gusts at Kure Beach in New Hanover County, just across the Cape Fear River from Brunswick County, were recorded at 77 mph, 2 mph above hurricane strength.

Ocean Isle Beach to have Fourth of July parade

By STAFF REPORT

Ocean Isle Beach will celebrate Independence Day with its sixth annual Fourth of July Parade, sponsored by the Ocean Isle Property Owners Association.
Parade chairman Lynda Eagle said individual streets such as Scotland, Richmond and Laurinburg used to have their own Fourth of July parades. Having one parade for the entire town was an event the property owners association decided it would like to sponsor, Eagle said.
The parade now draws both locals and visitors, as more than 700 people participated in the parade last year and even more lined the streets and watched.
“It’s just a big family, community event that everyone enjoys,” Eagle said.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on the Fourth and will be led by mayor Debbie Smith.
Participants are to meet in the Museum of Coastal Carolina parking lot at 9:30 a.m. There is no official registration and no fee to march in the parade.
Entries will be judged in four categories—golf carts, floats, walkers and bicycles. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers, but patriotic favors and flags will be distributed to all participants. Judging will take place five minutes prior to the parade.
PARADE ROUTE
Parade participants will turn left onto Second Street from the museum parking lot.
The parade will continue down Second Street to LaGrange Street, where participants will turn right, and then turn right on First Street. The parade will continue up First Street to Halifax Street and then back onto Second Street to the museum. There is no parking allowed along the parade route.
