When you’re vacationing with a family we know how important it is to have plenty of things lined up to keep the kids busy. It’s not like when we were kids and the ocean and beach were plenty to keep us occupied and happy. Today’s kids want to experience so much more than we did – they truly want it all. That said, here’s a list of area attractions in and around Ocean Isle Beach you’ll want to check out.
During the summer months there are Free Local Concerts with some of the best beach music, rock and roll, oldies, and Motown around! The concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday nights in the parking lot of the Museum of the Coastal Carolinas. Admission is free, just bring a chair and get ready to dance all night long.
The Museum of the Coastal Carolinas is one of the most popular attractions in Ocean Isle Beach. This is a natural history museum that offers free children’s programs where they are able to discover the nature of the coastal environment. Programs include educational programs for school groups, monthly lecture series, and seasonal outdoor classroom activities on the island. Summer programs include afternoon programs for children and families, live snake programs, and Family Night at the Museum program.
Come experience Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach Ghost Walks! You’ll get to hear about forgotten Civil War battles, haunted trains, lost ships, ghost planes, lights that baffle scientists, whiskey smugglers, haunted plantations, amazing apparitions, legends of lost treasure, and haunted houses, all here on Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach! The walks are approximately 1 mile with stops along the way. Tours leave from Salty’s on Ocean Isle Beach and from the Trading Company on Sunset Beach.
Ingram Planetarium is located between Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach. You won’t want to miss the fascinating astronomy and science programs for all ages held in the 85-seat Sky Theater. All shows are 1 hour or less. The theater simulates a perfectly dark, starry night that you can experience from your seat. Late arrivals are not admitted to the theater. We strongly recommend that young children attend the 3 p.m. show. During the busy summer season we offer fun family activities on various topics.
Come join any of the activities at the Ocean Isle Beach Community Center. The Community Center, located at 44 East First Street, will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., March through November. During the summer, planned activities for children will be held Monday thru Friday.
From May through October you must go Turtle Watching. During this time you can experience nesting and hatching of sea turtles along our Islands. Experience the wonder of a nesting loggerhead turtle or the “boil” of a hatching nest! During nesting lays, you may have an opportunity to name the nest for a small donation to the turtle watch program. “Nest parents” (volunteers) watch nests nightly during their expected hatching times to assist the babies into the surf and to protect them from predators. The “Turtle Lady” of Ocean Isle Beach, Gloria Hillenburg, holds weekly learning lectures at the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Monday nights during the summer.
Be sure to check out the Ocean Isle Fishing Center if you want to rent jet skis or take your family out on a fishing charter trip or sunset cruise. Stop by and see them at 65 Causeway Drive, Ocean Isle Beach. They’re open Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday-Sunday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
When you book your accommodations with us at Ocean Isle Inn, you’ll be staying in close to all of the above attractions as well
