Mark Your Calendar Now for the NC Oyster Festival!

It’s hard to believe it will be 34 years that the residents of Brunswick County have been putting on the upcoming North Carolina Oyster Festival but it’s true. Started in 1980 it’s been a treasured event attended by many every year since and you’ll want to make sure it’s in your plans when you come to visit so mark your calendar now!

NC Oyster Festival 2014Leading up to the festival are the Annual Surf-Off Competition held on October 4 and 5. The next weekend the new Muddy Oyster Challenge will be held on Saturday, October 11. This is a 5k mud run hosted by Low Country Sports Preserve and True Mudd.

The 34th Annual NC Oyster Festival is taking place October 18-19, 2014 on Ocean Isle Beach between 2nd and 3rd Street (8 East Second Street) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Rain or shine! Admission is $5. Children 8 and under are admitted free of charge.

During the Oyster Festival this area becomes a walking district that offers something for everyone. Tasty local cuisine, arts and crafts, children’s activities, live music, an Oyster Stew Cook-off Contest and the Oyster Shucking Contest. New this year is an Oyster Eating Contest as well as a Shagging Competition where folks will compete for the “Shaggin’ Oyster” titles hosted by the Coastal Shag Club of Shallotte, NC.

NC Oyster FestivalThere will be plenty of food at the festival and not just oysters. Everything from seafood, BBQ, pizza and crab cakes will be available. There are also plenty of desserts and specialty beverages to choose from.  The grounds will have many vendors displaying art and handmade crafts that include wood carvings, leather goods, jewelry, handmade furniture, stained glass, pottery and sculptures. Music will surround you as you enjoy the festival. Bring a chair if you want to just hang out and relax.

There will also be the annual Road Race on Sunday, October 19 and includes a 5k, 10k, and 1 mile fun run.
