It’s officially Memorial Day in the U.S. A day set aside in remembrance to those that have died in service to our great nation. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. In fact, there is evidence of folks decorating the graves of fallen soldiers even before the end of the Civil War.
All across the states, American flags are unfurled and proudly displayed from homes, vehicles, business establishments and just about anywhere else you can place a flag. Cities throughout the nation will host numerous parades; backyards everywhere will be filled with people grilling various foods while reminiscing lost loved ones.
Our company firmly believes in supporting our country’s soldiers, both past and present. Over a month ago we were contacted by a local non-profit organization that raises funds to help meet the needs of soldiers severely injured in battle. Step Up For Soldiers organized a fund raising event in our area for SFC John E. Masson. Deployed with the Special Forces of Ft. Bragg, NC, SFC Masson is now a triple amputee as a result of his service to our country.
Beginning on April 28 and lasting 4 full days, various vendors, community leaders and businesses joined together to raise funds to help support SFC Masson and his family. The Bridge Grill Restaurant in neighboring Sunset Beach played host to this event serving up some great food and drinks while various bands from the area entertained the masses.
The Ocean Isle Inn was pleased to show our support to this worthy cause and will continue to be thankful for the dedicated service the soldiers of our nation provide. Along with being involved with organizations such as Step Up For Soldiers, we also provide year-round discounts to both Active-Duty and Retired military persons and even offer discounted Military Wedding Packages.
