Now that you know where to rent kayaks (see our last month’s post if you missed it) you should plan on attending the Sunset Beach Paddle Festival on Saturday, September 24, 2016. This is a free festival that offers fun and entertainment for the entire family. The daylong festival will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sunset Beach Park, 206 Sunset Blvd. N, Sunset Beach in North Carolina. The event is open to the public.
This year’s festival will have an island beach theme. Wear your favorite Hawaiian outfit and prepare to say "Aloha!" a whole lot. Plenty of vendors will be onsite selling micro beers and food so plan on staying for lunch and an early dinner, too!
There will be kayak and stand-up paddleboard competitions challenging your technical and endurance skills. This year’s festival includes a 9.5 mile Elite SUP and Kayak Race through the Salt Boiler Course and a 5.5 mile Open Category race along the Fox Run Course. There will also be a 1.9 mile social paddle for non-racers and paddling enthusiasts through areas of Fox Creek to Jinks Creek and out to the Intracoastal Waterway.
There will also be activities for non-paddlers. Don’t miss the Dog Costume Content, Gilligan’s Island Lookalike Contest, Pie Baking Contest and a Limbo Contest. Children will love the games provided for them, too. Gracie the Clown will be there along with a Penny Drop, Pineapple Pitch, Rubber Duck Match-It, and a Tiki Toss.
Ashton Stanley, a local favorite, will perform acoustic music from 12 noon until 2:30 p.m. Singer and songwriter Randy McQuay along with his Trio will be performing from 3-5 p.m.
