How to Increase Your Chances of Finding the Perfect Shell

Shelling, or collecting sea shells, is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of Ocean Isle Beach- and take just a bit of it home with you. While it can be as simple as taking walks up and down our serene beaches searching for beautiful shells, there are strategies that the more determined shellers utilize to maximize their loot.

Here are our top 3 tips to get the perfect shell:

Early bird gets the shells

1. The early bird gets the worm… usually. The early hours of the morning, before 9:00 a.m. are some of the best hours to to go hunting for shells. However, another important factor to keep in mind is the tide- low tide is prime-time for snagging some trophy shells! Here is a great resource for keeping up with local tide times.

2. Get out there daily!
It’s simple- the more time you spend searching for shells, the more you’ll find! Taking a daily walk up and down the beach will not only allow you to find more shells, but it’s also a great way to get some exercise in! After all of that walking, you’ll have earned yourself some great food and cocktails.

3. Get out there after a storm!
The winter months are the best time to find some seriously beautiful shells! All of the tropical storms churn up the bottom of the ocean which causes all of those hidden gems to wash ashore. While these storms occur more frequently in the winter months, it’s always a good idea to get to the beach after bad weather rolls through- you never know what treasures the storm might reveal!
