Ready for the Storm

As summer approaches and visitors from various destinations flock to the coastal communities of the Carolinas, there is also another ‘visitor’ that often comes ashore: hurricanes! Summer brings hurricane season and in the Atlantic it begins June 1st and ends November 30th.  This year there have already been two named tropical systems prior to June 1.  Although scientists are predicting a relatively mild storm season this year, the development of two systems prior to the beginning of the season demonstrates the very unpredictable nature of weather.

Vacationers to Ocean Isle Beach can rest assured knowing that our community takes every measure to make sure that the safety of our residents and visitors is of top priority. In doing so, the town of Ocean Isle Beach has recently been named a StormReady Community by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service. StormReady communities are better prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness. Prior to being designated StormReady a community must meet preparedness criteria, outlined by a partnership between the National Weather Service, and state and local emergency managers. Included in this criteria are:

  • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center;
  • Have more than one method of receiving severe weather forecasts and warnings and alerting the public;
  • Create a system that monitors local weather conditions;
  • Promote the significance of public readiness through community seminars;
  • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding exercises.

An advisory board, comprised of National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologists, and state and local emergency managers, will review applications from municipalities and visit the locations to verify the steps made in the process to become StormReady.

The safety of all guests of the Ocean Isle Inn is also a top priority.  We want you to be able to relax and enjoy your vacation while with us. Whenever there is a named tropical system that looks as though it may head our direction we take that information very seriously. During such times our entire staff is updated daily as to the likelihood of a direct impact from such storm systems. We continuously monitor these weather systems and receive information from town hall so that we can answer any questions from our guests. If and when such a time comes that it appears a hurricane is on a direct path for our area and an evacuation order is issued by emergency officials we will notify all our guests immediately so that they can arrange for safe travel back home.
